Living Livigno
Through and beyond Olympics

Foster economy of community and nature

Our proposal for the Olympic village site of Livigno aims to prepare the city and the citizens to this big event before, during and after.

Planning: in order to organize private and public associations, activities and workers in the area linking existing and new functions, defining a supportive machine to the Olympic village and to the economic growth of Livigno by using sport, culture and recreation.

Landscape: following and implementing the established points by the IOC and the Olympics through a sustainable plan, we want to enhance the qualities of water and mountains by allowing their use all year long, considering the dry, liquid and solid conditions of the water and empowering the areas in close proximity to the water to let the users be more in contact with nature.

Architecture: the Olympic village made us consider a program and some functions related to the residents’ needs and the whole organization of the big events, so we are designing new buildings that could serve before the need of the community, than the Olympic games, and later have an impact on the future development of Livigno and its tourism.

The research takes into consideration the water resource in the Alpine region to understand its availability, complexity, and the relationships between different basins.
Understanding overlaps between the Olympic program and the components of the landscape is the key to identifying locations where the water system can have the most impact on creating a positive legacy.

The bid does not have a territorial strategy for managing the landscape and its relationship to the Olympic event, could water be a key link in achieving a territorial strategy?

The schemes represent some of how water exists in the environment and how it has shaped it and also how human beings are using this resource to sustain life and the economy of the region.

By mapping the hydroelectric power generation system it is possible to understand the network of large and small infrastructure that is used to control the water system and how it can be utilized for other activities that can generate economic value, such as infrastructure tourism.
The project proposes slow tourism trails exploring water as a source of health, energy,  tourism and rediscovery of the the landscape.

In the bid, it is stated that the Olympic Village has been chosen to be in this location because of the flatness of the land, the existing infrastructure, and the PGT, which states that the area should be regenerated.
This poses a risk to the environment that must be considered carefully in moving forward with the design and construction of the village. The area is also characterized by the risk of flooding if the water levels rise and also the possible location of landslides.

The location brings with it the opportunity to make interventions in the surroundings such as the development of a public park, the development of water sports and tourism, and the development of built infrastructure from the list of programs for the Olympic Village.

The Winter Olympics event provides a good opportunity for Livigno to rethink the relationship of the city with the natural environment, the already existing sports and touristic activities can be enhanced and made more sustainable by using the Winter Olympics as an opportunity to develop the unutilized river system near the site and build new infrastructure for research, protection, and development of the context.

Final reflection
Besides infrastructure, the practice of sport in everyday life is highly dependent on the availability of natural resources such as clean air, clean water, and undeveloped land, as well as healthy ecosystems such as green urban areas, mountains, forests, and lakes.
We recognize the need to protect natural resources, restore ecosystems damaged by humans, integrate the value of ecosystem services in decision-making, and in the long run, stop the global loss of biodiversity.
